Best Questions with Mira Leibowitz

Sex, business and style - we’re talking about it all with Please co-founder Mira Leibowitz.

At Best, we like to think of ourselves as a feel-good brand. So naturally, we simply had to grab a coffee and chat with someone who made feeling good their actual business.

Friend of the brand, Mira Leibowitz, is the co-founder of a Cape Town-based company called Please - an online store and community for anyone from anywhere to feel safe and excited while shopping for their most intimate products.

We chatted candidly with Mira about what it takes to start a business and the vital role of empowerment and confidence in her life - both professionally and personally.

What advice would you give to aspiring women who are interested in starting their own businesses, especially in industries that may be considered unconventional or taboo?

The first thing that comes to mind is that having a strong support system around you is key. Starting a business is no walk in the park, there will be many highs and lows. So friends, family and mentors who can give you advice and support are crucial. When it comes to starting something that may seem a little out there to some, I would say that if you’re passionate about it, it will feel right and don’t be afraid to be the pioneer, and the person to break some boundaries that probably need breaking. Someone’s gotta do it!

If you want to feel great, what is the one item you always turn to and find yourself wearing? What makes it so special to you?

I was lucky enough to have an incredibly stylish grandmother, especially when it came to her jewellery. I inherited some beautiful pieces from her after she passed, and I just love to wear this classic solid gold bracelet of hers. It makes me feel so fancy, just as she was.

In your opinion, what role does sexual empowerment play in achieving overall well-being and self-confidence?

My views are more holistic when it comes to well-being, everything is so connected. How you feel emotionally, physically, and mentally all play out and affect one another equally. So when you’re feeling good, healthy, and confident, you’re bound to feel empowered sexually. And the same can be said the other way around. Feeling empowered sexually will undoubtedly have a positive impact on your well-being and self-confidence.

Running a business requires constant learning and personal growth. How do you invest in your own development, and what resources or practices have been most beneficial to you in this journey?

Whatever you don’t know can be learned - Don’t doubt your ability to teach yourself new skills. Most people are happy to help you. Another simple thing I’ve learned is to reach out to people and pick their brains. People are more willing to help you than you think, so chatting to people with experience, asking questions, and learning from them has been extremely beneficial.

What habit/ritual do you do each day to keep you sane?

Recently I’ve started journaling in the morning, as soon as I wake up. It can be one word, one sentence, a whole page. But always ending on a positive note, something to look forward to or to be grateful for.

Being an entrepreneur often involves taking risks. Can you share a pivotal moment or decision in your career with PLEASE that required you to step out of your comfort zone?

It’s hard to pinpoint one moment or decision involving big risks because there have been so many leading up to, during, and currently running this business. Just starting PLEASE was a huge pivotal moment for me. Quitting a full-time job and going freelance was a risky decision. Taking the leap from having a dream and working with my partner, Greg, to bring it to life required many moments where I’ve been completely out of my comfort zone. Even working with my partner/fiance and now business partner was extremely pivotal. But they do say that growth is uncomfortable. If we’re not here to learn and grow as human beings, then why are we here?

Lastly, what’s your favourite quote?

I’ve always loved the quote ‘Be Kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle’. It really is true, and it is important to remember that with every human interaction you have.

Size Guide

We want you to be entirely satisfied with the way your ring fits. That means we need a little help from you before you choose your size.

Step One

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the base of your finger.

Step Two

Using a pen, mark the point on the string where the end meets.

Step Three

Using a ruler, measure this length in mm.

Step Four

Match your measurement to the table below.

Extra Tips

Don’t forget to allow for enough room to get the ring over your knuckle.

Remember that all of your fingers probably have different measurements. Make sure you measure the specific finger you are buying the ring for.

To be 100% sure, measure your finger at the end of the day. That’s when it is most likely to be at its largest.
